Mermentau Mardi Gras Courir
March 2, 2003

In Mermentau, the Mardi Gras Courir is also a fund-raiser for St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. The Mardi Gras will waylay anyone in their path, chasing and stopping cars, invading the Town of Estherwood–whatever it takes. In exchange for a donation, preferably bills instead of coins, the Mardi Gras offer beads.

The photos on this page show the first hour or so of the courir, including a stop before arriving in Estherwood when the Mardi Gras stop traffic on Highway 90. One Mardi Gras climbed up on the door step of an 18-wheeler, grabbed the overhead cord to the horn, and proceeded to sound the horn as the truck driver slowly navigated past the Mardi Gras.  The Mardi Gras are also shown at the bottom of this page dancing "the freeze" up and down Highway 90.

The chicken-chasing photo was taken at a baseball park in Estherwood, where the Mardi Gras perform for the town resident's and, of course, beg for money.
